The Basics Of Sewing
Sewing covers such a wide spectrum – it can be just a simple repair job like sewing on a button that’s come off or it can be huge projects that handle furnishing or clothing. The great thing about sewing is that it can be a fun thing as well as an acquired skill. All you need to do is start at the very beginning and that is how to thread a needle. Once you learn to do that, you can sew – yes that’s all it takes. After that, what you need to do to become better is to practice and to learn.
That doesn’t mean to say that it comes easy. Everything has its own challenges, its own special skill sets that you need to study hard to master. The thing is, you can start out with that needle and pick up the other stuff – whether from someone or online is up to you.
You’ll find as you look around that there are a whole lot of sewing lessons that you can avail of out there. All you need is the time to get out there and learn. Sewing needs a hands-on approach so you could maybe go to your local craft store and find out where you could sign up for a basic sewing lesson. Many stores that sell sewing machines offer free lessons so you could go in there and enquire and who knows, you might be able to enroll for lessons without even buying a sewing machine. Yet another place could be the local community center or any place that offers adult classes. Now in places like this, you can learn at a very reasonable cost and you also have companionship with people with similar interests.
You could of course always know someone who sews well. Find out if they will instruct you. That old aunt who used to embroider so well or a grandmother who just loved sewing those lovely quilts. Let’s face it – they will love teaching you as much as you will like learning this skill. For older people especially, it means company and spending time on something they love doing.
Of course, if none of this works, you always have the virtual world. Just go find yourself a few good tutorials and you’re all set to go. Just enter ‘sewing lessons’ into your search bar and you will be amazed at what a choice you have!
First off, get familiar with the terms that sewing uses. Like everything else, sewing has its own language and it helps to know them – at least a lot of them if not all. This is easy if you were to look for them online or better still, if you were to buy yourself a basic sewing book which familiarizes you with all the terms. Most of them are fairly simple but it helps to know. It also gets you inside that magic circle of sewing knowledge and you’ll find that you can follow directions so much better.
The trick about sewing is to start nice and easy – don’t get excited and start off with something complicated otherwise you’re going to get fed up and frustrated. This might even put you off sewing altogether. For example, you can start maybe by sewing a handkerchief or a cushion cover – something in straight lines so you find it easy. Then, as you get more confident, you can move on to more complicated stuff.
The trick is not to get too worried or upset if things don’t work out well. After all, practice makes perfect. So take care not to spend too much on whatever it is you want to sew because maybe you won’t be able to use it – but it will be one more step up in your sewing skills. Even if you want a machine, start off with a basic one or borrow one from someone close who isn’t using it. You’ll then know whether or not you want to continue with it. If your interest in it grows, well, go ahead and buy the best and enjoy it.
No, sewing is not impossible to learn – in fact you’ll be amazed how easy it is if only you spent a little bit of time learning it. Once you do, it will provide you with hours of joy!
